LANGKAWI, Malaysia The damage left behind by the Barisan Nasional (BN) government is much worse than previously thought, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said here last night.
The damage had made much more difficult the efforts of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government to fulfill the 10 election promises within the first 100 days of the new administration, he said.
We have achieved a victory that has brought (upon us) a huge burden. Before this, we did not know the extent of the damage, he said in his address at the breaking-of-fast with the people of Langkawi at Masjid Al-Hana here.
The event was the first official function of Dr Mahathir here after his appointment as the seventh Prime Minister following the Pakatan Harapan victory in the 14th general election on May 9.
Dr Mahathir had won the Langkawi parliamentary seat in the election, securing a majority of 8,893 votes to beat Nawawi Ahmad of BN and Zubir Ahmad of PAS.
Dr Mahathir , who was accompanied by his wife Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali and Kedah state Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) Mukhriz Tun Mahathir, also thanked voters in Langkawi for choosing Pakatan Harapan in GE14.
He said GE14 had caused the political temperature to rise but cautioned that it should not lead to social relations being affected.
I hope that with the conclusion of the election, the people in Langkawi will close ranks. Do not be so angry that differences cannot be set aside, he said.
At the event attended by some 3,000 guests, Dr Mahathir together with Mukhriz also handed over Aidilftri contributiona from Yayasan Islam Negeri Kedah to less fortunate people.
Dr Mahathir on arrival from Kuala Lumpur began his official programme with a meeting with Bersatu and Hindraf members in Langkawi.
