KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 8 (Bernama) — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is expected to intensify enforcement and inspection of heavy commercial vehicles to determine their roadworthiness in an effort to reduce the risk of accidents involving such vehicles.
JPJ director-general Datuk Zailani Hashim said tighter enforcement was needed to ensure that the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) during inspection of vehicles followed the strict guidelines and this will be done with the assistance of Puspakom.
The proposal is in line with Section 12 of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987, which is to make sure every commercial vehicle undergoes scheduled inspection in Puspakom to ascertain the roadworthiness of such vehicles.
He was speaking to reporters after witnessing Ops Puspakom that was held at the Puspakom Inspection Centre in Wangsa Maju, here today.
Zailani said the JPJ would also be beefing up procedures during the inspection of vehicles, especially the frequency in monitoring as well as auditing the operations of Puspakom through the JPJ Automative Engineering Team on a weekly basis, especially braches involved in the inspection of Heavy Commercial Vehicles.
“We will also review the procedures involved in the inspection of safety measures like brakes, tires and other components,” he said.
Meanwhile, speaking of today’s Ops that was held together with the National Anti-Drugs Agency, 256 vehicles were inspected and 158 notices were issued to 140 vehicles for various offences while three drivers who tested positive for drugs were detained.
