KUALA TERENGGANU, Several improvements will be made at the drawbridge in Terengganu to enhance its traffic flow and users’ safety.
Menteri Besar Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said there were several things to reviewed, including the guardrails on both sides of the bridge that were built relatively low, apart from road signs and frequencies of the traffic lights that affected the traffic flow.
There is a need to carry out an in-depth study on which stretch should be shortened or lengthened to ensure smooth traffic flow, but basically I am very pleased that the bridge has reduced traffic congestion during the peak period in the recent Aidilfitri celebration.
Usually, during the Aidilfitri celebration, the traffic flow was highly congested at the Sultan Mahmud Bridge, but for this year, there was no report on any traffic congestion on all routes connecting Kuala Terengganu to Kuala Nerus, and as such we have achieved our goal to reduce congestion, he said.
He was speaking to reporters at the event celebrating the success of the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Panji Alam’s innovation team here today.
The team won four major awards in the 11th European Exhibition of Creativity and Innovation (EUROINVENT 2019), an international competition held at the Palace of Culture, Romania from May 16 to 18.
Meanwhile, the RM248 million drawbridge currently open to the public until June 17 for a test run, in terms of coordination of its road signaling and the traffic system in the surrounding area.
Upon completion of the system testing, the bridge will be re-closed to traffic for checks on other components of the project and the official opening date will be notified after all work and commissioning of project components concluded.
Asked on steps to be implemented by the state government to beautify the surrounding area, Ahmad Samsuri said it was in the planning stage.
He said among improvements to be made include the bicycle lane from Teluk Ketapang to Kuala Ibai as well as parking bays for the public wanting to take pictures and videos of the drawbridge.
Surely the people’s safety is our priority and it is among aspects to be reviewed following the closure of the drawbridge on June 17 for assessment and improvement, he said.
