Global experts to discuss Sabah biomass development agenda

KOTA KINABALU, The Palm Oil Industrial Cluster (POIC) Sabah and the National Innovation Agency (AIM) will be organising a forum to discuss how the biomass sector can be developed as Sabah transforms into a more industrialised state.

Themed Going Circular Mobilising the Biomass Sector for Sabah’s Industrial Development, the one-day forum held on Oct 14 will be attended by an international group of experts, said POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Dr Pang Teck Wai.

In a statement today, he said under the National Biomass Strategy, Sabah had been identified as the national hub for the second generation biofuel based on the strength of the state’s palm oil industry, which boasts of 1.6 million hectares of oil palm plantation.

Pang added that the state government has vowed to turn Sabah into an industrialised state by 2030 by boosting its manufacturing sector’s contribution to the state’s gross domestic product from 8.2 percent in 2018 to 35 per cent in 2030.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal is expected to officiate the forum’s opening ceremony, while Deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Trade and Industries Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau will be delivering a talk entitled Sabah as a Bio-based Hub Moving Forward.

AIM is a unit under the Prime Minister’s Department, tasked to develop the biomass sector in the country.

POIC Sabah is a state-owned company assigned to spearhead the state’s industrialisation by promoting palm oil and biomass downstream industries.
