MIRI: The development of character, leadership and talent among students should be given equal importance in schools and other learning institutions, says Miri Resident Sherrina Hussaini.
She explained that such developments are as important as knowledge and would mould the students into well-rounded individuals who can contribute positively to society.
It is not enough if the development of excellence among students, be they in IPT (higher institutions of learning) or schools, is made solely by emphasising on intellectual and skills only.
It needs to be complemented with the development of personality traits, leadership and talent, said Sherrina when officiating at the closing ceremony of the inaugural ‘Kembara Siswa Patriotik 2018 Siswa Bersama Komuniti Zon Miri’ programme at Dewan Kampung Lembah Hijau here yesterday.
The programme was jointly organised by Kolej Komuniti Miri and Teachers’ Training Institute (IPG) Sarawak Miri campus in collaboration with and support from Kampung Lembah Hijau village security and development committee (JKKK), Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara (IKBN) Miri and several schools and kindergartens here.
The implementation of activities involving students and communities such as this can contribute towards complementing better individual attributes such as competence, agility, resilience, innovative, critical thinking, entrepreneurial, problem-solving, global mindset and perpetual learning.
I am also attracted to the concept of Kenduri (feast) in this programme because it is usually performed by the villagers, but for this programme all parties involved are working together with the villagers, Sherrina said, adding that such collaboration is strongly encouraged in educating the younger generation on the importance of maintaining the culture of ‘gotong-royong’ (work party).
She also hoped that various activities organised during the programme can inculcate awareness of preserving the environment among the students and enhance cooperation between IPTs, schools and communities for the success of academic activities and continuous education.
Sherrina pledged her continuous support towards the organising of such programme that could enhance cooperation between educational institutions and the local community.
I will always be fully supportive of programmes that are able to bring impact on the development of students in Sarawak and Miri in particular, she added.
Also present at the event was Kolej Komuniti Miri director Fadil Aziz.
