ALOR SETAR, The Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) detained four illegal immigrants and seized 1,579 kilogrammes of ketum leaves estimated to be worth RM142,110 at the Malaysia-Thailand border, near Durian Burung in Padang Terap yesterday.
Sixth Brigade Commander Brigadier General Mohd Halim Khalid said two men, one from Thailand and the other from Myanmar, suspected to be smugglers, while another two Myanmar illegal immigrants including a woman were nabbed by 6th Battalion of the Royal Rangers Regiment at about 5 pm.
“The soldiers came into contact with one foreign man, who tried to flee when he realised the presence of soldiers. However, the soldiers managed to nab the man. We believe this place is used to pack and transit ketum leaves before smuggling into Thailand, he said in a statement here today.
He added the interrogation led to the arrest of the others who were hiding in the forest, and seizure of a number of black plastic bags containing ketum leaves in a four-wheel drive vehicle.
The team also seized a Proton Waja car, seven handphones, and RM3,720 in cash at the location, he said, adding that the suspects were then taken to the Padang Terap District Police Headquarters for further action.
