Crews rescued from sinking barge in Labuan

LABUAN, Sept 17 (Bernama) — Two men were rescued from a sinking barge in bad weather off Kuraman Island Friday morning.

The barge with two crew members aged 43 and 57 onboard was transporting raw water to an offshore vessel near the island and it was towed by a cargo boat at around 4 am.

Labuan Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director Captain Nudin Jusoh said the cargo boat’s skipper and his two crews scrambled to rescue the barge crews when the agency’s team was approaching the scene.

“We towed the cargo boat and all the crews with the skipper to the MMEA jetty safely,” he told Bernama today.

Nudin said the cargo boat’s crews aged 32 and 39 with the barge crews as well as the 30-year-old skipper were not injured.
