Boat with 64 Rohingyas stranded in southern Thailand

SATUN (Southern Thailand), Thai authorities have found a fishing boat carrying 64 ethnic Rohingyas including five children stranded on Pulau Rawi in the waters of Satun, yesterday.

Thai navy officer Commander Thanapong Sudrak said the 64 Rohingyas comprised 31 women and 28 men with five children including a local Thai in the boat which they claimed had damaged.

Besides the group, he said were five more Rohingyas and locals believed to be middlemen involved in bringing the group to enter a third country.

Further investigations will be carried out on whether the group are victims of human trafficking or otherwise, he said.

The group had been brought to La Ngu district in Satun and were given food and drinks while waiting for further investigations.

Rohingya is a minority Muslim group in Myanmar who were forced to flee their homeland after facing oppression and they have since sought protection at temporary camps at the border following attacks on them in 2017.

Media reported about 740,000 ethnic Rohingyas are seeking shelter in overcrowded camps in Bangladesh.
