Kuala Lumpur: The Communications Ministry will continue to monitor the use of social media throughout the Ayer Kuning state by-election campaign to ensure that it is not abused to spread fake news, defamatory material, and content related to 3R (religion, race, and royalty). In this regard, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil advised all parties to campaign responsibly by steering clear of sensitive issues.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fahmi emphasized the importance of avoiding slander and 3R elements in the campaign, particularly on social media, noting the ministry’s capability to track messages and comments. He highlighted the recent amendment to the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, effective February 11, which allows for fines up to RM500,000 under Section 233 for those found guilty. Fahmi expressed hope that this serves as a deterrent against spreading slander during the campaign and beyond.
He relayed these warnings to reporters at the Lembah Pantai Parliamentary Constituency Aidilfitri Open House. The Ayer Kuning state by-election, scheduled for April 26, follows the death of incumbent Ishsam Shahruddin on February 22 due to a heart attack. The election features a three-cornered contest between Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Dr. Mohamad Yusri Bakir, Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Abd Muhaimin Malek, and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) candidate Bawani KS.
Commenting on the BN candidate, Fahmi, who is also the Lembah Pantai Member of Parliament, expressed confidence in Mohamad Yusri’s chances of winning. He cited Mohamad Yusri’s experience and education as strengths but stressed the need for hard work.
Earlier, at the event, Fahmi assured attendees that planned rapid development, especially in the Lembah Pantai area, would respect all parties’ rights. He mentioned the Urban Renewal Act (PSB) as a safeguard against oppression, guaranteeing the rights of involved parties.
Fahmi outlined plans for Lembah Pantai, including the construction of five Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations, to enhance service quality and performance for the residents of the area.
