Bertam Water Theme Park gets licence to resume operations

KEPALA BATAS, Jan 7 (Bernama) — The Bertam Souk & Water Park here has received a licence from the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) to resume operations as usual.

The theme park was ordered to close on Dec 28 after the MPSP issued a notice to its management to stop all entertainment activities at the water theme park under the Entertainment and Places of Entertainment Enactment 1998.

MBSP said the water park’s application for a licence was approved yesterday.

“The premises licence and entertainment licence for the water theme park was approved on Jan 6 that is the same day it (theme park) received the CCC (Certificate of Completion and Compliance).

“MBSP hopes that the reopening of the theme park will benefit visitors and it will become a new tourist attraction in the Seberang Perai area,” MBSP said in a statement today.

Previously, MBSP said it had conducted inspections several times from Dec 16 to 27 at the theme park.

It had found that the theme park was operating without a licence and issued a notice for the management to stop all activities there.

However, the management failed to comply with the directive, resulting in the closure action being taken at about 9.40 am on Dec 28.

The RM90 million theme park, which began operations on Dec 15 on an over eight-hectare site, is owned by The Maritime Waterfront Suites Sdn Bhd.

It was previously reported that the project was delayed for more than three years due to several problems, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

Work on RM300 million Johor Bahru Court Complex in Kota Iskandar to proceed – Azalina

KOTA TINGGI, Jan 7 (Bernama) — Construction of he RM300 million Johor Bahru Court Complex in Kota Iskandar, Iskandar Putri, which was abandoned four years ago, will be revived soon.

Minister in Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reforms) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the project will proceed since the state needed a court complex that is large and centralised.

“Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi and I will visit the project site, which was proposed and chosen during the administration of former Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin.

“In about three to four weeks, I will travel to Johor Bahru and invite the Menteri Besar to visit the site and I hope the legal division will proceed (with the construction),” she told reporters after a ‘doa selamat’ at the launch of the Pengerang service centre and the Pengerang parliamentary constituency mobile clinic here today.

She said the courts complex will house several High, Sessions and Magistrate’s Courts.

All paperwork, including the designs of the courts, has been in place since 2018 but had to be shelved when Barisan Nasional lost the 14th general election, the Pengerang MP said.

“So we hope the project will be revived. I believe there is no big court located at the Johor State Government Administrative Centre like other states,” she said.

On January 18, 2018, the Johor Sultan, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar urged the federal government to expedite the construction of the Johor Bahru Court Complex as the existing courts could no longer meet present needs.

Azalilna also said she would be visiting the Pengerang Court Complex in Bandar Penawar here in two weeks’ time.

“The Pengerang Court is now under construction,” she said, adding that the court will be relocated from the previous site in Kampung Pengerang.

Two senior company directors nabbed to assist in KL Tower sale probe

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 6 (Bernama) — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained two senior company directors with the title ‘Datuk’ to assist in the investigation into the sale of shares and the take-over of the concession of Syarikat Menara Kuala Lumpur (KL Tower).

A source from MACC said the two individuals, aged 49 and 59, were believed to be the middleman who managed the bribery and a managing director of a company said to have taken over the shares of KL Tower, adding that both of them were arrested at the MACC headquarters after giving their statements.

“These two individuals will be brought to the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court tomorrow for a remand application.

“It is suspected that the selection of the company concerned involved a request for bribe money amounting to hundreds of thousands of ringgit and a luxury watch as a gift to the ‘superior’ to facilitate the take-over,” said the source.

MACC chief commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the arrest when contacted, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 16 of the MACC Act 2009.

Previously, the MACC was reported to have investigated allegations over the suspicious sale of shares and the take-over of KL Tower maintenance concession from Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd, a company wholly owned by Telekom Malaysia (TM).

Several witnesses, including senior TM officials as well as the companies involved, have had their statements taken to assist in the investigation.
