He said the celebration for Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud's 81st birthday will be held on Sept 9.

Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife Datin Amar Datuk Juma'ani Tuanku Bujang are expected to join Taib and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Raghad Kurdi Taib for the Thanksgiving Prayer.

They will be welcomed by me, as the minister-in-charge of the three-day celebration. Other cabinet ministers and leaders are also expected to attend the religious event, said Awang Tengah.

On the day of the main celebration (Sept 9), he said the grand parade and rally would start at 8am, with 81 contingents expected to take part in the event.

He said the number of contingents signifies the Head of State's age 81, and each contingent will be made up of 44 people, making the number of participants almost 4,000.

All the contingents will perform the march past and after that the Chief Minister will be invited to deliver his speech. Later, the Governor will be invited to perform the symbolic launching ceremony and to cut a special birthday cake to be presented by 81 pupils to the accompaniment of pyro salute and release of balloons, Awang Tengah elaborated.

After the rally and parade, the Head of State will adjourn to the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) to present state awards and medals to recipients.

In the evening, the Head of State and Chief Minister and their wives will attend a state dinner at the DUN complex, he added.

On Sept 10, Taib will attend a 'High Tea' reception at the Waterfront Hotel, during which he would present gifts to the needy and later on launch two exhibitions known as 'Pameran Dirgahayu' and 'Raja Kita' (Our King) there.
