70-year-old disabled woman dies in house fire

IPOH, A 70-year-old woman with visual and hearing impairments died in a fire which destroyed her house in Kampung Ara Payung, Batu Gajah, near here today.

Alang Alimah Amban, who suffered 60 per cent burns, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Perak Fire and Rescue Department.

The department received a report about the fire at 1.11 pm, and two rescue teams from Batu Gajah and Seri Iskandar fire stations were dispatched to the scene, its spokesperson said in a statement.

Batu Gajah district police chief ACP Ahmad Adnan Basri said preliminary investigations showed that the victim was alone at the time of the fire.

Firefighters found her lying on the kitchen floor and they managed to bring her out from the burning house.

However, she was pronounced dead by medical assistants at the scene, he said when contacted.

He said a post-mortem at the Batu Gajah Hospital showed that she died of suffocation due to heavy smoke inhalation.
