Exhibition of historical artifacts at Wisma Bernama Digital Library

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 26 (Bernama) — Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) employees enjoyed a unique chance to appreciate history first-hand through an exhibition of war artefacts held at the Bernama Digital Library at Wisma Bernama today.

The one-day exhibition, under the Clientele Cafe Special For August programme in conjunction with National Day, showcased various interesting artefacts including bullet casings, ammunition, military insignias, gas masks and bayonets.

Malayan Historical Group (MHG) chairman Shaharom Ahmad said the collection gathered historical artefacts dating from the beginning of the World War I to World War II and was unique in nature.

“In the past, we could only see such artefacts in books and pictures, but with this exhibition, people in Bernama can see for themselves the tools that were once used in daily life, battlefields and for hunting.

“The special artefacts in this collection are the Malay State Guide badge and the Royal Malay Regiment badge because they are hard to find. After the World War, most of these badges were lost or thrown away. So the process of finding them is quite difficult, and the cost is also high because they are collector’s items,” he said.

Other artefacts highlighted at the exhibition were the British Royal Engineers badge, the WW2 Vickers Machinegun Ammo Belt, the WW2 Fullerphone Mk.IV and the WW2 Portable Kitchen Stove.

Enforcement of law on shorter working hours postponed to Jan 1

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 26 (Bernama) — Enforcement of amendments to the Employment Act 1955 to provide for shorter working hours has been postponed to Jan 1 next year from its earlier scheduled date of Sept 1, said Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri M. Saravanan.

He said this was decided by the Cabinet today after industries and employers unanimously asked for the postponement due to several factors.

Apart from reducing working hours from 48 to 45 hours per week, the amended law will also increase maternity leave from 60 days to 98 days and paternity leave from three days to seven days.

He said engagement sessions with stakeholders found that industry players especially employers needed a bit more time for the amendments to come into force because they were still dealing with the issue of shortage of foreign workers and were recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“After listening to everyone we (the government) have come to a conclusion that we should give another three months for the recovery of the economy. Otherwise, I am just worried that if the industries suffer, a lot of us will lose their jobs.

“Of course, the ministry is concerned about the interests of the employees. This (delay) is to safeguard their interests,” he told a news conference here today.

Saravanan said the restrictions imposed on the entry of foreign workers in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic had resulted in a shortage of manpower in industries.

He said although Malaysia now allowed foreign workers to enter again, the process of fulfilling the manpower needs of industries would take time.

“This is the final postponement. By hook or by crook, these amendments will be enforced on Jan 1,” he added.

The amendments were approved by Parliament in March this year, and Saravanan had earlier said that the amended law would be enforced on Sept 1.

KPWKM allocates RM9.5 mln for flood management this year

PASIR MAS, Aug 26 (Bernama) — The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry (KPWKM) has allocated RM9.5 million as preparation for the monsoon season this year.

Its deputy minister, Datuk Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff said the allocation was distributed to the Social Welfare Department (JKM) for flood management purposes, such as the provision of food, blankets and other necessities for flood victims.

She told reporters this after launching the Women’s Career and Entrepreneurship Programme in conjunction with the Pasir Mas ‘Jjupo Mato’ Keluarga Malaysia Festival at Dataran Bandar Baru Pasir Mas today.

Elaborating, Siti Zailah said a total of 7,000 JKM personnel nationwide were also ready to carry out disaster management duties in the affected states.

“KPWKM also constantly cooperates with other government agencies to tackle floods in the states. We also get the cooperation of volunteers from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and companies who are ever ready to assist in various ways during floods,” she said.
