Chicken prices may soar once floated

PUTRAJAYA, June 16 (Bernama) — The price of chicken is expected to rise next month when it is floated following the end of the maximum retail price scheme on June 30.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said following the possibility of price hikes involving chicken, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) was planning to provide assistance to the needy which would be finalised by the end of this month.

“MOF will do something to help those in need,” he told a press conference after the monthly assembly of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) here today.

The government sets the maximum retail price of standard chicken at RM8.90 per kilogramme and super chicken (slaughtered and cleaned without legs, head, liver and gizzard) at RM9.90 per kg.

Previously, chicken breeders have expressed their hopes that the government will allow a free float of chicken prices following its decision to end the subsidies issued to breeders effective July 1.

Meanwhile, Nanta reminded industry players not to take advantage of the floating price by raising the price of chicken arbitrarily.

He said KPDNHEP would also monitor the price aspect and if necessary will use the power under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act (AKHAP) 2011 against errant traders.

“I hope the industry players will not take advantage and raise the price too much. We will accept if it is reasonably done as we all know that cost of operation has increased,” he said.

12,000 hectares in Kelantan, Terengganu to be replanted with corn

KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 (Bernama) — The National Farmers Organisation (NAFAS) has identified 12,140 hectares of tobacco land in Kelantan and Terengganu to be replanted with corn.

NAFAS in a statement today said the switch is for food security to help the government reduce its dependence on imports of maize grain, one of the main raw materials in poultry feed production, to stabilise chicken prices in the market.

Through the effort, NAFAS also aims to capture 20 per cent of the poultry market in the country with  the production of 144 million birds a year.

“NAFAS’ involvement in the poultry industry value chain will be implemented top-down through the Farmers Organisation (PP) network of three (other) levels consisting of 14 state PPs, 279 area PPs and almost one million farmers across the country.

“This effort should also create new employment opportunities and increase economic activities in the areas involved to raise income levels for the locals residents,” it said.

According to the statement, Malaysia currently imports almost 100 per cent of corn or about two million tonnes a year from countries such as Argentina, Brazil and the United States.

NAFAS is however confident that through the support of stakeholders, the corn cultivation project for fodder can be implemented.

“This large-scale NAFAS effort can reduce the country’s dependence on corn imports for animal feed which in turn can stabilise the market price of chicken,” it said.

Selangor Sultan salutes Lee Lam Thye on his political journey

KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 (Bernama) — The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah today paid tribute to Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye on his political journey and for showing how a people’s representatives should really be.

The Sultan said he witnessed with his own eyes how impressive Lee’s many years of serving the rakyat (people)  had been from being the state assemblyman for Bukit Nenas in 1969 to Member of Parliament for Bukit Bintang for four terms from 1978 to 1990.

“Lee is actually a real YB (people’s representative) which can also be translated as Yang Bekerja (one who works for the people) or Yang Berkhidmat (one who serves the people). The real Yang Bekerja and Yang Berkhidmat for the rakyat.

“No point becoming a YB with the title Yang Berhormat but not carrying out one’s duties well, just lip service and self interest,” said His Royal Highness during his speech when launching the book ‘Call Lee Lam Thye – Recalling a Lifetime of Service’, here today.

Sultan Sharafuddin was glad that Lee still continues to serve the rakyat and help the people through several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) although he is no longer a political party member.

The Sultan also hoped that Lee will share his side of the story and reasons behind his political retirement in 1990.

Sultan Sharafuddin added that he was also impressed with Lee’s abilities and credibility as a people’s representative whereby he was willing to go down to the ground and always ready to listen to the people’s problems and complaints.

He said Lee was knowledgeable in various matters and always carefully thought out things before talking about an issue, especially involving the daily lives of the people.

Apart from that, he said Lee also cared about stray and abandoned animals so much so he became the patron of the Selangor chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, he said, also often praised and respected Lee’s efforts in looking after the welfare of stray animals.

Visually impaired candidate excels in SPM 2021

GEORGE TOWN, June 16 (Bernama) — The principle of “Where there is a will, there is a way” steered a special candidate to excel in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2021 examination.

Tan Jun Sheng, 18, a visually impaired candidate from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Georgetown managed to obtain 2A+s, 5As and 1B+ in his subjects for SPM 2021.

Tan said his disability was not an obstacle to try something new and the SPM results had clearly proven that one should be courageous enough to venture.

“Even though I was born with vision problems because my eyes cannot focus in the light … I dared to take difficult subjects in SPM because of my interest in geography and sports science.

“Many people asked me why … but I am interested in geography as I want to know the earth more closely, apart from enjoying sports since I was a child,” he said when met at SMK Georgetown here today.

Tan, who is the only child in the family, said despite the eye-sight handicap, he could still read with a magnifying glass in primary school.

“My vision started to deteriorate when I was 14 and now I can’t see anything when it is bright,” he said.

He said he initially faced difficulties in learning under the home-based online lessons introduced in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said school teachers were a big help in preparing and sending diagrams while his mother read textbooks to him.

Tan’s mother, Anna Lim, 49, said she was very pleased with her son’s SPM results because this was the result of his sheer hard work and never-give-up attitude.

“I would also like to thank all the teachers at SMK Georgetown for their dedication,” she said.

Meanwhile, SPM 2021 outstanding student Nur Aina Fadhlina Ahmad Fazli, 18, from SMK Bukit Jambul said she was determined to achieve the best results to repay the faith of her teachers and the sacrifices of her mother, who is a single parent.

Nur Aina, who scored 9A+s, said that although it was tedious to study online during the pandemic, she would be awake as early as 3 am to do her own revision.

“I intend to continue my studies in accounting though I am still unsure on which university,” she said.

Nur Aina’s mother, Nor Dibradini Selamat, 46, said although her daughter’s SPM trail examination results were quite good, she never expected her to obtain A+ in all her subjects.

Dibradini, a lecturer at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Kedah, said she was supportive of any major that her daughter was keen on.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, June 16, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The innovation behind Xypex Chemical Corporation’s crystalline waterproofing technology for concrete will be featured in the June 19 episode of Inside the Blueprint, an award-winning television series that chronicles ideas and products that impact our lives.

It’s airing on Fox Business News on June 19 at 2 p.m. (Eastern), on Bloomberg News in LATAM on July 10 at 10 a.m. (Eastern) and in syndication thereafter. The episode describes how Xypex’s proprietary crystalline waterproofing technology works deep inside the concrete mass to create a permanent waterproof structure that resists extreme hydrostatic pressure and self-heals cracks that can form.

The episode explains that concrete is unrivaled as a building material. It is used in millions of building projects around the world. And while concrete is durable, it can deteriorate in harsh environmental conditions, causing large expenditures on remediation or replacement construction. Enter Xypex, a Vancouver-based company that developed a proprietary crystalline waterproofing technology in 1969. Proven over decades of use in all types of structures under the most challenging environmental conditions, Xypex was recently certified as the first and only admixture for waterproofing concrete in the EU.

In this season’s Focus on Innovation, Inside the Blueprint examines four critical steps that lead to cutting-edge products: Inspiration, the Idea, the Process, and the Impact. Inside the Blueprint traces these steps with members of the Xypex leadership team, who explain how Xypex significantly extends the life of concrete structures using a proprietary technology that is environmentally friendly and can extend the service life of structures from 50 to 150 years.

While the company is driven by innovation and leading-edge technology, its leadership team explains that Xypex prides itself on being in the “people business” through extensive support to its customers and longstanding relationships that make it the preferred product with architects, engineers and contractors in more than 90 countries around the globe.
