LTO Network and Sphereon Partner With Triall for World’s First Application of Blockchain Technology to COVID-19 Clinical Trials

Triall will use LTO Network’s blockchain infrastructure to anchor COVID-19 research data, enhancing the safety, security and reliability of research data in the digital era.

AMSTERDAM, Sept. 07, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Dutch blockchain companies LTO Network and Sphereon have partnered with Triall, experts in the realm of blockchain and clinical research, to deliver the first COVID-19 clinical trials anchored to blockchain technology.

In a critical first step towards advancing the digital age of clinical research, Triall will utilize LTO Network’s blockchain technology and infrastructure to anchor research data to the blockchain, securing the integrity and security of clinical trial data.

“Together, we are building the world’s first clinical-trial software powered by the blockchain that will secure and streamline the development of a safe and affordable future in medicine,” said Rick Schmitz, CEO of LTO Network.

“The ongoing COVID-19 crisis has sparked digital transformation across the pharmaceutical landscape. Our collaboration with LTO Network will pave the way for a range of innovative e-clinical software solutions supporting decentralized clinical trials,” said Hadil Es-Sbai, CEO of Triall.

Modern clinical trials take years to complete, often involving vast amounts of data that need to be secured and protected to ensure not only a steady timetable, but also the reliability and integrity of the data involved.

Despite its roots in the financial sector, many aspects of blockchain technology—namely decentralization, security and privacy—offer several advantages in the realm of clinical trials.

Clinical trial operations are plagued by extreme cases of fragmentation, leading to lack of oversight, recordkeeping failures, delays, and enormous amounts of unnecessary costs. According to an industry-wide survey, 98% of clinical trial professionals report the need to unify and integrate isolated systems and processes. Decentralized identity solutions, underpinned by emerging blockchain standards such as Decentralized Identifiers and Verifiable Credentials, offer ample opportunities for consolidating the severely fragmented landscape of clinical trial stakeholders and software systems.

Clinical trials are not immune to fraud, bias and selective reporting. The immutability and traceability of data proofs anchored to the blockchain ensure the transparency and integrity of research data, improving the trustworthiness of all clinical research across the board.

About LTO Network

The LTO Network team is on a mission to create and maintain a fully decentralized and highly efficient blockchain infrastructure, directly applicable and aimed at creating value for organizations. LTO Network can be used by any company with a need for a production-ready blockchain that allows for digital verification of digital assets and enabling collaboration through the use of decentralized workflows.

About Triall

Triall brings Web 3.0 to medical research by creating a digital ecosystem of blockchain-integrated software solutions that secure and streamline the development of new vaccines and therapeutics during clinical trials. Triall’s solutions make clinical trials tamper-resistant, and enable secure and efficient integrations between the many isolated systems and parties involved in clinical trial processes. Triall’s software is created by clinical trial professionals to ensure optimal user experience, solving actual industry pain points.

Higher chicken price: Terengganu KPDNHEP checking on supply chain

KUALA TERENGGANU, Sept 7 — The Terengganu branch of the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) today confirmed the increase in chicken price in the state currently.

Its director, Saharuddin Mohd Kia in a statement said the inspections conducted at 18 wet markets, four hypermarkets and 24 supermarkets across Terengganu found that the price of chicken had gone up to as much as RM10 per kilogramme.

“The data show that the retail price at the wet markets has gone up to between RM8 and RM10 per kg, between RM6.90 and RM8.49 at the hypermarkets, and RM6.90 up to RM8.89 at the supermarkets.

“It is claimed by the traders in general that the price increase is due to a number of unavoidable factors like the lack of supply from the farms and increase in the price of chicken feed but we are still checking on these claims.

“We are also checking with the suppliers on the price and costs, and also on profiteering under the law. Stern action will be taken against traders trying to take advantage of the current situation,” he added.

The Terengganu KPDNHEP has, however, assured that there is sufficient supply of chicken for the people in Terengganu.

It also welcomes the cooperation of consumers by channelling information on malpractices or complaints to e-aduan@kpdnhep.gov.my, its hotline at 1800-886-800, e-aduan@kpdnhep.gov.m, the EzADU smart phone application, enforcement directive centre at 03-8882 6245/6088, to 019- 279 4317 via WhatsApp, to its Facebook page or Twitter account or by going to the KPDNHEP Terengganu office.

The media had earlier reported complaints from restaurant and catering service operators in Terengganu of having to absorb the sudden increase in the price of chicken.

Assemblymen moot one-off payment for frontliners in Negeri Sembilan

SEREMBAN, Sept 7 — Several Negeri Sembilan assemblymen have asked the state government to consider giving a one-off incentive to frontliners in recognition of their role in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.

Bagan Pinang assemblyman Datuk Tun Hairudin Abu Bakar said the incentive should be given based on their efforts and contributions in helping the state quietly and continuously since COVID-19 hit the country in March last year.

“Therefore, I suggest they be given RM500 incentives each, irrespective of whether they are from federal or state agencies, local authorities, non-governmental organisations and volunteer activists,” he said during the debate session at the Negeri Sembilan state legislative assembly sitting at Wisma Negeri here today.

Pertang assemblyman Noor Azmi Yusof concurred, saying that everyone should appreciate how the frontliners have worked tirelessly to flatten the COVID-19 infection curve and having to sacrifice their time with their families due to the risk of infection.

He said the efforts by frontliners, assisted by various other parties, had enabled Negeri Sembilan to transition successfully to Phase Three of the National Recovery Plan in a short period of time.

“If the federal government could give a RM600 incentive to each frontliner recently, we should also do the same for everyone in the state as they have done so much to help Negeri Sembilan achieve herd immunity in such a short time,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chembong assemblyman Datuk Zaifulbahri Idris proposed that the state government improved broadband facilities in the state, as it was vital for the education and business sectors that are transitioning online following the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We hope the state government will emphasise this issue and take drastic measures together with the related agencies, including the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), especially in rural areas,” he said.

The sitting resumes tomorrow.

Azeez Rahim not freed of corruption charges yet, trial still ongoing – MACC

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 — Former Tabung Haji chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim has not been freed of corruption and money laundering charges and the trial of the case is still ongoing, said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

MACC, in a statement today said media reports quoting Abdul Azeez’s counsel Amer Hamzah Arshad as saying that his client has been freed of all the charges was a defence’s argument at the Appeal Court yesterday.

“Amer Hamzah argued that a financial analysis report by the MACC previously acquitted his client of corruption charges. MACC would like to stress that the statement was only an argument that has not been decided by the court,” said the statement.

The MACC hoped that the public would not speculate on the case, adding that the court would hear the the prosecution’s counter arguments on Oct 6.

Abdul Azeez, 55, is appealing against the High Court’s dismissal of his application to strike out the three bribery charges involving RM5.2 milion linked to road projects in Perak and Kedah, and 10 money-laundering charges involving a total of RM13.9 million which he was accused of receiving from Menuju Asas.

He is alleged to have committed the offences at CIMB Bank, Jalan Tun Perak in Kuala Lumpur on Dec 8, 2010 and at Affin Bank, Puchong City Centre, Selangor, on June 13, 2017 and April 10, 2018.

On the money laundering charges, Abdul Azeez was charged with committing the offences in the Klang Valley area between March 8, 2010 and Aug 30, 2018.
