During 2020, the Group’s VistaJet, the first and only global business aviation company, saw an increase of 29% globally in new subscription memberships year-on-year, with Europe accounting for 43% of new Members, North America 25%, Asia 18% and the Middle East 10%. Great start to foiling smuggling in Perlis

Seizures from smuggling cases in Perlis increased sharply in the first three weeks of January compared to the same period last year, said state police chief Datuk Surina Saad.

She said even though the number of criminal cases decreased by six per cent, the seizure value reached RM3 million compared to about RM1.5 million in the first three months last year.

“Police seized various smuggled items including an attempt to smuggle ketum leaves to a neighbouring country,” she told reporters after inspecting roadblocks on the first day of the Movement Control Order (MCO) implementation across the state beginning today.

Surina said the seizures involved confiscations carried out by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Malaysian Border Security Agency (AKSEM) and state Customs Department

She also hoped smuggling and other criminal cases will reduce during the MCO.

Commenting on the roadblocks mounted in the state, Surina said 20 vehicles were told to turn back after failing to give valid reasons to the police at four locations in Tambun Tulang, Padang Besar, Kaki Bukit and Beseri.

Transition programme to ease students’ entry into following year – MOE

— A transition programme will be implemented this year to see students’ readiness and prepare them for entry into the following year, said Education director-general Datuk Dr Habibah Abdul Rahim.

She said the programme was formulated after school students were not able to undergo the proper learning session in schools last year due to the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO).

The 43-day transition programme involves all students in primary and secondary schools and is done according to the method deemed appropriate by the teachers involved, she said in a virtual press conference on the 2021 school operations today.

“Last year, they were in school for several days only. As the ministry is concerned over the differences in terms of communication and how the learning took place at home, taking into account the differences in access to learning, we have proposed this transition programme.

“If there is a learning gap among pre-school children entering Year One this year, how do we prepare them in terms of readiness for Year One,” she added.

On the implementation of home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) this year, Habibah said it would be thoroughly monitored to help teachers and schools improve the method from time to time.

“Previously, we only monitored how many teachers and student were involved in PdPR, but now we want to see in terms of the subjects taught and if teachers conduct PdPR online, how much time was taken for the sessions and the percentage of students’ attendance for each session,” she said.

Meanwhile, Habibah said on the first day of school on Jan 20, the attendance was encouraging recording 95 per cent, involving candidates who will be sitting for the 2020 major examinations.

The percentage was much higher compared to the reopening of schools in July last year during the Recovery MCO period which was about 91 to 92 per cent, she said.

On the educational television programme, TV Pendidikan, Habibah said it would run for nine hours daily, from Monday to Friday and would be broadcast on Okey TV, Astro and NTV7.

“We are also planning to increase the TV Pendidikan airtime to reach out to more students because more than 90 per cent of households in Malaysia have television so the access is definitely wider,” she said.

Water supply disruption in four districts in Kelantan

— A total of 32,018 account holders in four districts in Kelantan are expected to experience water supply disruption from today until Jan 30, according to Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd (AKSB).

AKSB, in a statement today, said the districts involved are Machang with 16,000 accounts, Pasir Puteh (9,539), Kota Bharu Selatan (5,979) and Kota Bharu Timur (500).

It said the disruption was caused by leakage at the raw water supply pipeline in Kampung Pulai Chondong, Machang, yesterday and AKSB had to temporarily shut down the operation of Medan Telaga Sungai Bagan, involving the Merbau Chondong water treatment plant.

“AKSB is in careful planning to replace the water pipeline on a scheduled basis and we expect the work will take until Jan 30 to complete.

“However, it depends on the situation on the site and AKSB will update the status regularly,” the statement said.
