November 7, 2019

  • Sunrise chooses Philips’ resident safety cloud-based platform to power Welltower’s new, first of its kind assisted living and memory care community for Manhattan seniors
  • Philips wearable devices with real-time resident locating and alert system technology provide actionable insights to help support senior health and wellness

Amsterdam, the Netherlands and New York, New York – Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA), a global leader in health technology, today announced its collaboration with Sunrise Senior Living to bring state-of-the-art technology to benefit seniors and their families at Welltower’s flagship senior living community in New York City. Sunrise at East 56th is Manhattan’s first of its kind assisted living and memory care community, serving as a premier technology showcase for seniors, helping to achieve wellness goals as well as supporting patients with mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease and related forms of memory loss.

As one of Welltower’s premier operating partners, Sunrise is a leading senior living provider with more than 325 communities throughout the U.S., Canada and the U.K., and total unit capacity of approximately 29,300. The new community will leverage Philips Cares for Senior Living to transform care delivery through innovative technology including real-time resident locating, alerts and communications when assistance is needed, as well as wellness tracking. This alliance will enhance the experience of Sunrise at East 56th’s residents to positively impact staff efficiency, and provide residents’ families with deeper connections to their loved one through digital technology.

Empowering Manhattan’s seniors and caregivers with connected digital technology
Seniors are increasingly opting to spend their retirement years in urban environments, with NYC’s population of residents ages 60 and older projected to grow by 22 percent to 1.86 million by 2040 [1]. Those who live in the city can benefit from proximity to family members, public transportation, and elite healthcare providers – all of which can minimize social isolation. Beyond being in a convenient location, senior living operators need to modernize their infrastructure and leverage technology solutions to enhance their operational performance while keeping pace with a growing senior population that needs support at each stage of the aging journey.

“At Philips, we’re committed to easing the senior’s aging journey and the caregiver experience through digital innovation. Philips’ next generation resident safety system allows senior living facilities to stay ahead of the curve, to ensure both resident and staff satisfaction, and support population health management through connected solutions,” said Derek Ross, Business Leader of Population Health Management at Philips. “We’re excited to continue our collaboration with Sunrise and our partnership with Welltower to help them serve the needs of Manhattan’s aging population and their families and look forward to further opportunities within the Sunrise portfolio of senior living communities.”

The Philips Cares for Senior Living resident safety system will give the staff at Sunrise at East 56th enhanced visibility into the wellbeing of residents. The system combines wearable devices with cloud-based capabilities including real-time resident locating with personalized boundaries, alerts when assistance is needed, mobile-enabled communications, and wellness tracking. Advanced analytics provide actionable insights into resident activity, including comprehensive incident and trend reports, with real-time alerts delivered to mobile and desktop devices.

“Sunrise at East 56th is a one-of-a-kind urban community, designed and operated to enhance its residents’ lives and health. The Welltower platform continues to be a leader in integrating leading technology, payor and operating partners to provide the highest quality residential sites of care for our aging population,” said Thomas J. DeRosa, Chairman and CEO of Welltower. “We are proud to collaborate with innovative health technology leaders like Philips who share our vision in the qualitative strides that cutting-edge elder technology can add to the well-being of an aging population.”

Enhancing the future of senior care through adaptable innovation
Sunrise at East 56th is designed for seniors looking for the very best in care and wellness in the Manhattan neighborhood they call home. The community will provide personalized assisted living as well as a secure, engaging environment for seniors with memory loss, including Alzheimer’s disease. The project was conceived and financed by Welltower and developed by Texas-based Hines. The 130,000 square-foot Sunrise at East 56th community is expected to open in the summer of 2020, with approximately 150 units over 17 floors.

“At Sunrise, we’re committed to enhancing our residents’ quality of life and seeking opportunities to innovate. We believe our senior living communities should be as unique and savvy as the residents we serve,” said Chris Winkle, CEO of Sunrise. “By teaming with Philips, we will provide our seniors, particularly those with cognitive and memory impairments, an individualized wellness experience that advances their safety and happiness, and helps provide added piece of mind for their caregivers. We look forward to continued collaboration to explore future technologies to support residents and their wellness.”

Adaptable and designed to be enhanced as technology evolves, Philips’ resident safety platform helps position Sunrise for long-term success in the market. Philips Cares for Senior Living is part of the Philips Cares solution family, which together empower at-risk seniors and their professional and family caregivers across independent living and senior living communities to help make sure the right care is being provided at the right time.

Nasdaq Launches Artificial Intelligence for Surveillance Patterns on U.S. Stock Market

New technology will extend to market surveillance clients globally

NEW YORK, Nov. 07, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Nasdaq, Inc. today announced the successful go-live of artificial intelligence for surveillance patterns on The Nasdaq Stock Market, the world’s largest stock exchange by volume traded.

Developed as a collaboration between Nasdaq’s Market Technology business, its Machine Intelligence Lab and the company’s U.S. market surveillance unit, the initiative enhances Nasdaq’s market surveillance functionality with artificial intelligence and transfer learning to improve detection of malicious activity. Currently, Nasdaq’s U.S. market surveillance team annually reviews 750,000+ alerts that flag unusual price movements, trading errors and potential manipulation.

The new technology, which is currently patent pending with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, provides Nasdaq with unique artificial intelligence capabilities for market surveillance including:

  1. Deep Learning –allows computers to understand extremely complex patterns and hidden relationships in massive amounts of data
    • learns invariant representations
    • uses ‘hidden layer’ in find increasingly complex relationships
    • can learn any function, including highly non-linear ones
  2. Transfer Learning – creates new models from old models
    • rapid implementation
    • scalable model development
    • detect new forms of financial crime in new markets
  3. Human-in-the-Loop Learning – allows analysts to share their expertise with the machine efficiently, allowing them to focus on investigation and evidence curation
    • man-machine integration
    • label generation on-the-fly for sparse or unclear classes
    • human assisted model improvement leads to more signal and less noise in flagged examples

Nasdaq plans to expand the technology to other exchanges and regulators worldwide via the Market Technology business, as well as to other Nasdaq markets. The company will also extend the range of scenarios the system detects.

“Working closely with our U.S. surveillance team, we are able to train our models based on their experience in monitoring data directly from the trading engine of the world’s most liquid and dynamic market,” said Tony Sio, Vice President and Head of Marketplace Regulatory Technology, Nasdaq. “Through transfer learning, we have now built a framework to provide those learnings to other marketplaces around the world. We believe this is a major step in the evolution of how we use artificial intelligence technology to maintain the integrity of capital markets.”

In Nasdaq’s recent annual study of market surveillance of the global capital markets, firms emphasized recent investments in artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) capabilities, ostensibly hoping such innovations will help reduce false positives in trade surveillance by improving the efficacy of alerts. The survey revealed investments in this technology rose dramatically: 42% of respondents report they recently invested in AI/MI, and 65% plan to invest in it over the next 12 to 24 months.

“The U.S. capital markets are the largest, most liquid financial ecosystem in the world and protecting our markets for retail and institutional investors alike is an important responsibility,” said Martina Rejsjo, Vice President and Head of Market Surveillance, North America Equities, Nasdaq. “This means constantly evolving how we adopt and leverage new technologies to better surveil trading activity. By incorporating AI into our monitoring systems, we are sharpening our detection capabilities and broadening our view of market activity to safeguard the integrity of our country’s markets.”

“Artificial intelligence and machine learning have broad application across our company – from predicting market trends with Nasdaq’s proprietary data or creating more sophisticated market surveillance capabilities,” said Michael O’Rourke, Senior Vice President, Head of Machine Intelligence, Nasdaq. “We want to make every one of Nasdaq’s businesses better and smarter by providing them with richer data and more context-specific information. AI is going to play a crucial role in building the next generation of technologies for not only the capital markets, but every industry.”

As the industry benchmark for real-time and T+1 cross-market surveillance platforms, Nasdaq’s surveillance technology automates the detection, investigation and analysis of potentially abusive or disorderly trading. The technology is built to improve the overall efficiency of the surveillance organization and reduce cost, even as market complexity and new regulations increase. These solutions are used to power monitoring for more than 59 marketplaces, 19 regulators and 160+ market participants, including several buy-side institutions, across 65 countries.

Altus Group Opens Up CRE Ecosystem with ARGUS API Enabling Better Data Usability and More Connected Workflows

ARGUS API allows for open integration of cloud-enabled ARGUS solutions with other customer applications and data paving way to enhanced connectivity for global CRE industry

TORONTO, Nov. 07, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Altus Group Limited (“Altus Group” or “the Company”) (TSX: AIF), a leading provider of software, data solutions and independent advisory services to the global commercial real estate (“CRE”) industry, announces the launch of ARGUS API, a gateway that provides integration capability through an extensive set of available APIs (application programming interface) to connect cloud-enabled ARGUS solutions with other customer applications and data.

As the global CRE industry continues to be challenged with disparate systems and disjointed workflows resulting in data complexities, ARGUS API provides greater access to and integration of CRE data between ARGUS solutions and a variety of client data sets, sources and applications. It puts customer data to better use by enabling a more seamless flow of data and paving the way to more easily connect industry applications and streamline real estate workflows.

ARGUS API connects through ARGUS Cloud, a CRE asset and investment management platform that leverages functionality and data from industry-leading ARGUS solutions, including ARGUS Enterprise (“AE”). ARGUS API will be available in mid-December 2019.

“The CRE industry is experiencing a proliferation of systems servicing key workflows which is generating islands of data; this has created an urgent need to better put data to work with a more open, seamless and integrated approach,” said Carl Farrell, President of Altus Group. “Through a broad set of APIs that we will make available, ARGUS API helps to solve workflow connectivity challenges by enabling clients to more easily connect applications and data across systems. The result for clients is less complexity and greater ability to derive more value from their data.”

ARGUS API provides the following key benefits:

  • Flexible & Simplified Integration – provides integration flexibility through an extensive set of available APIs with the ability to connect hundreds of data points while reducing the need for complex database integration and development work.
  • Greater Access & Utilization of Data – provides clients centralized and synchronized access to multiple sources of streamlined data between cloud-enabled AE and clients’ additional data including revenue and expense actuals and market data such as sales and leasing comparables while eliminating redundant and time-consuming data entry.
  • Increased Workflow Connectivity Between Applications – allows for real-time streamlined integration across different applications and systems to quickly assess impact of key assumptions during various stages of the real estate workflow. Clients can also utilize and connect the cloud-enabled AE calculation engine directly to their non-ARGUS applications.

In addition, Altus Group is collaborating with several leading CRE technology providers to develop pre-built API connectors that will provide an integrated and more seamless flow of data between ARGUS Enterprise and other commonly used third-party industry solutions. These pre-built connectors, to be made available at a future date, will bypass the need for up-front API integration development work, and significantly accelerate fully integrated connectivity between ARGUS and various third-party platform applications.

Tanjung Piai by election highlights cage fish farming in Kukup to tourists

PONTIAN, Apparently, the upcoming Tanjung Piai parliamentary by-election is not simply about its candidates only.

It has also opened the eyes of the public, including media practitioners, from outside Pontian on its interesting tourist attractions particularly the Tanjung Piai National Park, which is the Southernmost point on mainland Asia

Another famous site in Kukup is Kampung Air Masin which is known for its downstream fisheries products such as fish crackers, shrimp paste (belacan) and ‘cencaluk’, as well as the cage fish farming industry manned by about 70 breeders over the last 20 years.

Nowadays, the fish farmers have diversified their income into the tourism aspect too and not just focusing solely on marketing their fishes locally or exporting to Singapore.

Tan Chee Wei, or popularly known as Albert Tan, 38, and several other breeders have been actively pursuing agro-tourism over the past two years by offering tourists the opportunity to visit their fish cages.

He said the idea came about as many tourists, especially Singaporeans, visited Kukup every week to buy fresh fish or for fishing activities.

When fishing, they will spend a few days in the nearby chalets. So we thought why not use this opportunity to offer a little variety in the form of tourism activities, he told Bernama when met at his fish farm, recently.

Tan said in the beginning, he and his friends did not charge tourists to visit their fish cages as their intention was only to help the government attract tourists to Kukup.

However, there were many incidents of where the wooden stakes of our cages were broken due to too many visitors at one time, we needed to spend a lot of money on its maintenance.

One wooden plank costs about RM380, so it’s quite burdensome. So beginning this year, we are charging RM2 per tourist. The fee is for the maintenance of the fish farms (cages), he said. His ‘kelong’ usually received at least 2,000 visitors a month.

He said anyone wishing to visit the fish cages would have to first contact a boat operator near the Kukup International Ferry Terminal.

Tan said at the moment, he has 108 fish cages operated by two workers. They rear golden pomfret, red snapper, threadfin, angle batman fish, ‘kitang’, grouper and sea bass. He also has flower crab in few cages but for his own needs.

The market price for these fishes are between RM35 and RM52 per kilogramme but the grouper has the highest demand for its sweet flesh. Many restaurant owners, especially from Singapore, love it, so the orders for it is not less than five tonnes a month, he said.

Tan also planned to venture into boat rental business for anglers going on fishing trips in the waters of Pulau Kukup, as well as increasing the production capacity of his own downstream products especially anchovies, cencalok and shrimp paste.

Meanwhile, state Tourism, Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Liow Cai Tung described the initiatives by Tan and his friends as in line with the state government’s wish for the industry players to work together in developing the tourism sector, not to mention Pontian district has great potential in the eco and agro-tourism sector.

Cage fish farming is one of the tourism attractions in Kukup and has many followers, including Singaporeans.

I understand that Kukup is visited by many tourists who like to stay overnight and visit both its national park and enjoy fresh seafood at nearby restaurants.

“I have met with local tourism industry players and suggested that they offer a three-day and two-night stay package in the area to further boost state tourism products,” she said.

Guide ‘Mat Lajak’ to become future champions – Nasiruddin

KUALA TERENGGANU, Many of the country’s current top cyclists, including Azizulhasni Awang, Anuar Manan and Mohd Harrif Saleh, were once part of ‘mosquito bike gangs’ or ‘mat lajak’ as called them today.

Despite the ‘bittersweet’ nature of the pasts, it is interesting to study the early days of these legends.

Nasiruddin Wan Idrus, 53, who is a talent scout and the man responsible for bringing ‘mosquito bikers’ to the international scene, said all of them had a craze for cycling as well as extraordinary courage.

However, there was also a sense of ‘foolishness’, he said, mainly due to their young age, with no proper guidance or awareness that their acts could endanger lives, and led to social ills such as skipping school.

“I took a vow to transform these ‘mosquito bike gangs’ when I saw thousands of children gathered around Kuala Terengganu during Merdeka night in 2000. At that time, Anuar, Harrif and his brother Zamri were still either children or teenagers.

“I realised that they needed guidance and a proper programme. I approached Anuar and his friends, about 50 of them, as they regularly came to my bike shop in Batu Buruk. Beginning with casual conversation, I finally convinced them to patrol with me on bicycle every evening after Asar prayers,” he said when interviewed by Bernama here today.

The name ‘mosquito bike gang’ came about incidentally, he said, as children night-time activities and the buzzing sound of their bicycles which sounded like flying mosquitoes.

Nasiruddin, who was a Terengganu state cyclist from 1971 to 1991, said it took him eight months to get close to the group, inviting them to cycle from Kuala Terengganu to Marang, before getting to know who their parents were and how they moved around in groups every night.

Starting from the bike shop, he raised funds through the donations from various individuals, and even the children involved also chipped in with RM2 per week as a savings fund for their use during training and programmes.

“I volunteered to help and train them as well as provide material support. After eight months, came the idea of creating a race track. The first circuit was built around Gong Badak, and from there, many people came forward to help expand the programme.

“After starting in Kuala Terengganu, we did it in other districts … when we organised a race in Dungun, almost 200 from this ‘mosquito bike gang’ rode over 80 km from Kuala Terengganu to Dungun,” said Nasiruddin, who is currently the chief operating officer (COO) of Terengganu Inc TSG Cycling Team (TSG).

Asked what drove him to go all out and help these children to get onto the right track, Nasiruddin said: “When I got to know Zamri and Harrif better, I went to their homes. That’s when I saw how difficult their lives were as orphans.

“Their childhood was filled with poverty and hardship. When I saw that they were gifted in cycling, I instilled in them a desire that their love of cycling would change their future. I am grateful to have been able to witnessed a lot of good things that happened in their lives. Many of these riders are from poor families, ” he said.

Nasiruddin said he would also organise competitions and the riders would be given cash prizes of between RM10 to RM50, but that was not the main goal, as most of the children just wanted to have fun and compete with each other.

He was also thankful that no untoward incidents or accidents occurred in any of the events organised since 2001, as a large number of people come out to help manage the event, while parents also provided support.

A hero who has always adhered to the principle of ‘we can do it’, Nasiruddin is often regarded by national riders as a father figure, and most of the riders at TSG and even assistant coaches comprised those from the ‘mosquito bike gang’, who have been transformed for the better.

Touching on the issue of ‘mat lajak’ which is on the rise in several other states, Nasiruddin said the matter required the support of all parties, besides the adoption of a more systematic approach to educate these children.

He said the Village Community Management Councils (MPKK) and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) could play a role in remedying the situation by guiding the children cyclists to the right direction.

“Many are focusing on sports programmes, however, few involve children as young as eight years old (in their programmes). Something needs to be done for their future. This night cycling activity is dangerous.

“Don’t just stop them (from carrying out the activity), but rather we should help the younger generation. Give them a hand by providing knowledge and guidance, so that they can become heroes one day,” he said.
