Patient-Derived Tumor Organoid Drug Development Platform Launched

Industry Leading Innovation Promises to Disrupt Traditional Drug Discovery

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 17, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Crown Bioscience today announced the launch of a new tumor organoid drug development platform with the potential to significantly improve the predictivity and speed of preclinical drug discovery.

The initial phase of the platform launch features the first commercially available 3D in vitro PDX-derived organoid (PDXO) models generated from CrownBio’s uniquely-characterized library of 2500+ patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models.

PDXOs are biologically equivalent to highly predictive in vivo PDX models, both being cancer stem cell driven disease models. PDXOs bring the added benefits of speed and scalability inherent to in vitro systems which are ideal for high-throughput, large-scale screens and simultaneous testing of multiple combination strategies.

These 3D in vitro models have been developed using best-in-class Hubrecht Organoid Technology (HUB) protocols, originating from the Clevers lab, guaranteeing robustness and proven translatability. CrownBio has an exclusive license from HUB to provide preclinical oncology drug development and validation services using HUB’s Organoid Technology.

The initial launch of PDXO models includes more than 10 cancer types. Phase 2 of the platform will see HUB patient-derived organoids (PDO) available exclusively from CrownBio in Q1 2020.

“At CrownBio, we’ve pioneered the development of patient-derived models,” said Henry Li, PhD chief scientific officer at CrownBio. “Our new library of well-characterized and annotated organoids with matched in vivo PDX models offers an unprecedented translational workflow for preclinical drug discovery. For the first time, a truly seamless transition from in vitro to in vivo is possible. Through our model annotation, there’s also the opportunity for automated biomarker discovery to improve our ability to predict patient response.”

Further benefits of patient-relevant PDXO models include preserving the genomic, morphological, and pathophysiological identity of their parental PDX tumors. PDXO and PDX also display similar pharmacology profiles.

“We are delighted to see HUB Organoid technology being successfully applied to the development of PDX-derived organoids and being made available to the broader industry by CrownBio,” said HUB CEO Rob Vries, PhD. “This pioneering system provides access to an expanded library of patient-derived in vitro and in vivo models effectively bringing a wider cancer patient population into the lab.”

HUB Organoids are already a proven preclinical oncology tool providing consistent and stable growth through passages and superior quality assay readouts compared to standard 2D and 3D systems. Organoid biobanks can also be established without losing original identity for follow on or repeat studies.

Behind the Wheel: Simply the best – 75 years of mechanized sugar cane harvesting

CNH INDUSTRIAL N.V.

Behind the Wheel – Sugar Cane

The affection Ken Schmidt, Product Performance Manager for Case IH, has for the machine he calls “the Tina Turner of sugar cane harvesters” is at once blindingly obvious and infectious. Ken positively delights in inviting his audience to ask him the question: what does an iconic piece of agricultural machinery from the 1980s possibly have in common with the legendary Queen of Rock? All is revealed in this latest episode of our Behind the Wheel series which traces the history of sugar cane harvesting from its very beginnings to the present day:
cnhindustrial.com/simplythebest_en

London, October 17, 2019

The year is 1944 and the young men of Australia, who would usually be engaged in bringing in the sugar cane harvest by hand, have been called elsewhere. Happily for the population of Australia, the Toft brothers take the famous words of Plato, “necessity is the mother of all invention”, to heart and invent the world’s first mechanized sugar cane harvester. And the rest, as they say, is history.

2019 marks the 75th anniversary of the first Australian built mechanized sugar cane harvester. The Toft brother’s invention revolutionized the industry and improved the working conditions of the thousands of workers who previously carried out the back breaking work of cutting sugar cane by hand. By the 1970s, Toft Bros was one of the most significant manufacturers of cane harvesters in the world. In 1986 the company rebranded as Austoft, and in 1996 was acquired by Case IH, today a global agricultural machinery brand of CNH Industrial (NYSE: CNHI /MI: CNHI). The film includes some spectacular aerial footage of the latest Case IH Austoft machines at work in Brazil, where they are now manufactured, and from where they are exported across the globe.

This Behind the Wheel webisode provides a snapshot of the history of sugar cane harvesting mechanization and pays tribute to the pioneering Toft brothers and their ingenious invention though the use of archive footage, photographs and interviews with past and present employees.

Leading Australian VMware Cloud Provider Chooses Cloudian Object Storage as Foundation for New Services Offerings

AUCloud Will Enable Customers to Capitalize on Rapidly Growing Ecosystem of S3-Compatible Applications

SAN MATEO, Calif., Oct. 16, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Cloudian® today announced that AUCloud, Australia’s sovereign cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service provider, will deploy Cloudian’s new object storage solution for VMware Cloud Providers. Managed directly from VMware vCloud Director, the Cloudian solution enables these cloud providers to offer new and enhanced S3-based storage services that leverage its limitless scalability, cost-effectiveness and rich feature set.

AUCloud focuses exclusively on meeting the needs of the Australian government and Critical National Industry (CNI) communities, requiring it to meet the highest standards for data management and security.

As a VMware Cloud Verified Provider, AUCloud was excited by Cloudian’s recent announcement that it had developed a purpose-built object storage solution for vCloud Director environments. After extensive testing, AUCloud decided to purchase the solution.

“With the S3 API having emerged as the de facto standard of public and private cloud storage, we see an opportunity to deliver new value-add services to our customers, capitalizing on Cloudian’s fully native S3 compatibility and advanced features,” said Phil Dawson, managing director of AUCloud. “Given the customers we support, Cloudian’s Common Criteria and FIPS-2 security certifications were also key considerations in our decision.

“We’re primarily looking at offering S3-based Storage-as-a-Service, Backup-as-a-Service and Archive-as-a-Service. Because Cloudian also provides offloading of big data workloads, this could be of significant interest to us as well.”

In addition to S3 compatibility, Cloudian offers the ability to start small and scale without interruption to an exabyte of storage. Other key Cloudian features include multi-tenant resource pooling, integrated management tools such as billing and quality of service controls, data encryption and Write Once, Read Many (WORM) for security and compliance, and geo-distribution for easily managing storage across multiple data centers.

“AUCloud is a great example of how independent cloud providers can create a leadership position in a rapidly evolving market,” said Jon Toor, chief marketing officer at Cloudian. “Through our partnership with VMware, we’re helping these providers develop new and profitable business opportunities by offering specialized data management and protection services to their customers.”

BrandSafway Wins Access Project of the Year

Recognition for Access Solution on $100 Million Space Needle Renovation

Kennesaw, Georgia, USA, Oct. 16, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — BrandSafway was awarded the 2019 Access Project of the Year – Mast Climbing Work Platforms, Transport Platforms and Hoists at the Access, Lift & Handlers (ALH) Conference in San Diego, California, on September 12, 2019. The company won for its unique work platform and weather barrier solution for the recent $100 million renovation of Seattle’s iconic Space Needle. “The circular suspended access system, installed by BrandSafway for the renovation of Seattle’s Space Needle, was the highest, most weather protected suspended platform ever constructed,” one of the award judges commented. “It was a really cool project, taking a lot of engineering, a lot of thought, and expert management to make it happen.”

Dubbed the Century Project, the Space Needle renovation ensured that this icon will continue to define the Seattle skyline into the next century. Featured as the cover story on the August 2019 issue of Scaffold & Access magazine, the project included a 106-foot-diameter starter platform using the QuikDeck® Suspended Access System, which was then hoisted into place at 500 feet with 12 two-part Tractel hoists, each with an 8,800-pound capacity. Once secured, the platform was then built out to its full size of 135 feet in diameter at a weight of 174,000 pounds. BrandSafway then erected an all-season weather barrier, using Systems Scaffold and HAKI®, which could withstand a 115 mph wind load.

“The ALH award recognizes our engineering team’s ability to work hand-in-hand with our customers and third-party engineers to design solutions for the most extreme challenges – all while keeping safety first,” said Art Eunson, president of BrandSafway Services. “I’d also like to congratulate our on-site teams, led by project manager Sean Drew, branch manager John May and site foreman Jake Willis, for their flawless execution.”

“The bottom line for us [was] having a safe project,” said Bob Vincent, project manager, Hoffman Construction, the general contractor for the project. “BrandSafway had no injuries, no recordable incidents and no dropped objects. That’s fabulous, and something BrandSafway and their crew should be very proud of.”

Paul Jolicoeur, technical manager of product applications and the principal BrandSafway engineer for the project noted, “Our confidence level was much higher because we used Autodesk Navisworks®, a project review software for engineering and construction professionals. We imported Hoffman’s 3D model, confirmed support clamp locations, evaluated loads and checked for clashes. You name it, and we could model it and share data with the other engineering teams.”

Key renovation elements included installing 176 tons of specialty glass and structural modifications so that the Space Needle could offer a seamless exterior line of sight, including a view of the ground 500-feet below.

“With glass walls, glass barriers, glass benches and even glass floors, visitors can feel like they’re floating over the city,” said Karen Olson, chief marketing officer, Space Needle LLC. “The Space Needle has always featured some of the best views of the Pacific Northwest. Now it offers some of the most thrilling.”

Organized by ALH magazine and its publisher KHL Group, the leading supplier of international construction information in the world, the ALH awards are designed to “celebrate the best of North America’s access and rental industry.”

Quality content vital for print media to face digital era

SHAH ALAM, The country’s traditional media ‘will not collapse’ if the agencies change their ways on how they invest their content to face the digital era.

Deputy Defence Minister Liew Chin Tong said this was because there were still many who were willing to spend money for authentic news from the mainstream media where such opportunities should be taken advantage of.

With the advent of fake news these days, there are still loyal readers ready to pay for authentic news.

Therefore, the way we spend on content must be changed as I see genuine news media agencies being able to survive in print or online form,” he said as a panelist at the forum, ‘Survival of Print Media: Why go soft when you can go hard’ organised by Universiti Teknologi Mara’s Mass Communication Alumni, in collaboration with the Mass Communication Faculty at UiTM Rembau, Negeri Sembilan here today.

The other panelists were Datuk A. Kadir Jasin, who is media and communications adviser to the Prime Minister, Datuk Khalid Jaafar, who is the adviser to the Economic Affairs Minister, and UMNO Youth vice-chief Shahril Sufian Hamdan.

The forum was moderated by marketing coach and consultant professor Abdul Hamid Mohamed.

Liew said with changing times, the question was whether we have that type of organisations that reflect the thinking of the people, he said.

On the other hand, Shahril Sufian argued that print media was changing and everyone should recognise the marketability of digital content.

Citing the example of several foreign newspapers, he stated that they were also adapting to the digital age by charging for online content for revenue.

To be in line with the development of the digital era, media agencies should be ‘independent’ and represent the voice of the people and not promote any particular agenda.

If editorial content is not the voice of the people, if it openly promotes an agenda, no one will read, whether print or online.

“As such, your (media agency) content needs to be seen as independent and represent the voice of the reader. In addition, it must accept the fact that while the content is good, there must be a digital subscription,” he said.
